Cicatrice Urbaine, DKolletif - VEWA Dudelange 2023

RELIEF

The sprawling steel production site surrounding VEWA reminds me of a disaster zone, prompting the immediate response to erect a shelter tent for any survivors.

I created this shelter from discarded materials donated by the local Red Cross Dudelange and also from my own accumulation of inherited, collected and saved materials. Old sheets, pillow cases, shirts, pants, napkins, table cloths, etc. were cut up and reconfigured into a giant patchwork to cover a standard ‘relief’ tent structure.

The installation can be interpreted in different ways. From the outside it presents itself as bright, cheerful and inviting, a cosy sight on rough terrain.  Visitors who step inside will find traces of work, seams which are frayed, with rudimentary sewing connecting each piece, fragile materials supported by strong sturdy materials, old materials next to new synthetic materials. Perhaps a symbolic mirror of our society, or strong cells helping heal damaged cells, supporting and regenerating each other?

The installation offers a point of departure for visitors to create their own meaning and connections to the site.

In her new series of works, the artist deals with questions of preservation, which means the question of inheritance, keeping, holding in value or valuing.

We are all attached to certain objects, not necessarily because of their material value, but because they have always accompanied us, as objects of memories. Childhood memories of a silver spoon, the scissors skillfully used by grandmother, mysterious vases painted with flowers that were simply always there and fired out imagination. And, of course, old photos that keep blurred or vanished memories alive forever, always retroactively telling and shaping our own history.

Havarie 2021

Havarie f (genitive Havarie, plural Havarien) accident, emergency (most often of a ship);

collision, crash, loss by sea

A pool in almost perfect condition, condemned to disappear in the near future.

HAVARIE seems to perfectly describe the condition of this site, which is sinking into destruction and oblivion.

A pool emptied of its water without a purpose, all but a volume in space.

HAVARIE spelled out at the bottom of the empty pool foretells the site’s future. Ambient sounds create an atmosphere alluding to activity past or present.

External visual stimuli coming through the large windows are blocked out, to help immerse the visitor in the pool’s familiar sounds, and to raise awareness of a new and strange atmosphere.
